[WGO] Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?

Yes, I’m interrupting my Top 2(00)9 of 2009 — mostly because I’m scheduling these posts ahead of time (as I’m going back up north to visit family for the holidays), so I figured I wouldn’t have much time to discuss the following mishmash o’ topics till 2010. To everyone who’s supported the blog over the past year, thank you so much — and keep it coming! šŸ˜‰ To everyone who’s submitted artist material for review — I haven’t forgotten about you, and you will be my first priority in January. So without further ado.

  • So, how about that Susan Boyle, huh? If Taylor Swift was last year’s little engine that could, SuBo definitely takes the cake. Her debut record has only been out for a few weeks and is already in competition to be the biggest seller of the year. Her physical sales aren’t what’s surprising to me, considering her key demographic is generally ones that would still buy albums and not pirate them as other more “typical” popstars would pitfall to. No, what surprises me is the sheer amount of support in the United States — considering we didn’t discover her persay. No one here watches ‘The X Factor’ or ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ unless its through webrips, and I don’t feel like her promo campaign has been that heavy…It kind of blows my mind, actually. I’d love to pick the brain of her PR reps.
  • Chris Brown has up and pulled a Miley Cyrus by leaving Twitter following a curse-filled rant rage over his new disc Graffiti being “blackballed” at major retailers like Walmart (Considering Walmart’s strict regulations regarding music censorship, I’m sure they were a bit nonplussed by Brown’s incredibly articulate arguments). Apparently, this all stemmed from CB attempting to find his own CD at the retail giant in Connecticut, and couldn’t find it. So he threw a big hissy fit and quit Twitter after looking a giant fool. His main question was “What do I gotta do?” (This shows me his multiple attempts at public apology via “tell all” interviews were obviously just publicity fautter — and they hardly seem legit after he pulls this level of whining.) Well buddy, considering your sales are somewhat decent in a recessive sales market despite the fact that you viciously beat up your ex-popstar girlfriend, you should be keeping your mouth shut and being thankful for the support you are already getting. As a music retailer wrote recently, the idea of buying an album of love songs performed/written by an artist who gained the majority of his press this year for attacking his girl is kind of…strange.
  • Rihanna‘s new video for “Hard” has surfaced, complete with sexualized military imagery. That was the nail in the coffin for Rated R for me. I’m done until “Cold Case Love” is released. And I’m not joking. End of story.
  • Speaking of Miley Cyrus (kinda), she’s in a bit of hot water recently (after her now notorious statements of never hearing a Jay-Z record but namechecking him in her hit “Party in the USA”) when she stated she wanted to stop making pop music in favor of more “edgier” material. Right — because that worked so well for Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens. It pains me that so many artists who tend to do pop music well shrug off the label once they recieved a level of respect. Pop just doesn’t get the kudos it deserves, and as a fan of some of Miley’s music, it kind of hurts my feelings that she would consider the sound that made her famous not worth her time. I understand that all artists evolve and change with time, and that is most definitely for the best, but I wish the whole “Pop is for little kids” thing to just go away. For those of you who dug Miley’s sound and are annoyed by her nonchalance, I suggest Selena Gomez & The Scene‘s new single, “Naturally”. It has very similar elements to “See You Again”, and works as a fairly good substitute. Plus, I love that little girl.
  • In Girls Aloud news, a press statement has been made that Nadine Coyle‘s solo record is due in the Spring of 2010. As sort-of-excited as I am (after Cheryl‘s debacle…I’m a little leery of the Alouds going it alone), I’m translating this to mean that 2010 will be another Girls Aloud free year? ….
  • Sade‘s brand spankin’ new single “Soldier of Love” is making the rounds, and I know it seems like a reptition of everyone on your blogroll when I state the song is AMAZING, but it really is. And you don’t even have to take my word for it — the world pretty much agrees already.
  • Billboard Magazine has named Mariah Carey‘s “We Belong Together” the ‘Song of the Decade’. I suppose I can live with this. I can even live with Usher‘s “Yeah” being at #2. However, Flo Rida‘s “Low” at #3? This I cannot, nay will not tolerate. Rolling Stone has gone a different way entirely, giving the top spot to Gnarls Barkley‘s “Crazy”. Definitely more worthy than “Low”. Definitely.
  • Timbaland‘s Shock Value 2 has seen release, and as I expected, it pretty much went right through me. There are high points, however. First single “Morning After Dark” (feat. SoShy and Nelly Furtado) still sounds awesome, and his other cut with SoShy, “Ease Off the Liquor” is fun too, if only for the opening blare of “Timbo is back…Timbo is back, babe.” The truth of that statement is yet to be seen however. The two other premo cuts: second single “Say Something” featuring the rapper of the moment Drake (but I like it mostly for Drake’s chorus), and “Lose Something” featuring an all-growed-up-now JoJo. The latter makes me so psyched for her upcoming third disc. Sadly, I’m afraid it will be overshadowed, as word is already starting to percalate that “We Belong To the Music” (featuring the aforementioned Cyrus) will be given single status soon. Buzzcut “Carry Out”, featuring Justin Timberlake, is being prepped as the next US single, and a lot of people seem to be digging it…but I’m not one of them. First time ever I’ve said that about a JT/Timbo collab. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again — end of an era.
  • The annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations are in, and Kiss has been snubbed for the 800349384239th time. However, in the ultimate of “twists”, ABBA has been nominated, getting a lot of music snobs all up in arms, as they are a ‘pop’ act, and not ‘rock and roll’ enough for the Hall. Can we all just say BS? (Once again,) Since when has pop not been considered influential enough? Virtually all of the artists featured there can be arguably labeled as pop — as they appeal to the masses. SMH. And as if we needed a reminder of ABBA’s greatness, I present to you Exhibit A. Tell me that’s not rockin’!
  • Rumors are swirling that the Pussycat Dolls are on the verge of imploding. Gasp, say it ain’t so! These are hardly new thoughts — several of the members have voiced their disdain over the fact that Nicole Scherzinger gets all the solos (and recently even got “featuring” tags in songs recorded by her own group — ridiculous). If I was one of them, I’d be mad as hell, too. I draw the line at various group members wanting to branch out on their own, as I don’t have much to judge their vocals on (I firmly remember when I saw them live opening for the Black Eyed Peas that a few of them didn’t even have microphones — glare). However, the sheer fact that Interscope and Robin Antin insist on making Nicole be the supposed star so overwhelmingly is definitely not cool, and is one of my main beefs with the group. I don’t understand where this sense of self-entitlement even comes from — did homegirl forget she was pretty much discovered on a failed reality show about forming a wannabe Girls Aloud? (I’m not hating, I had the single — at least all five of them got to sing there. Hurumph.) Hmm…Word is a few of the other four of PCD may be “switched out” in favor of new girls by request of creator Robin Antin, but Scherzinger’s involvement will not cease to exist completely as Interscope attempts to relaunch her failed solo project at the same time. Drama, drama, drama. Can I just say — all this blahblahblah about PCD being a “brand” first and foremost is the part of mainstream music that really makes me sick. It’s not that none of these girls were talented. Anyone else getting Sugababes flashbacks?
UPDATE: Kimberley Wyatt has confirmed her departure from the group, and it seems likely that the only other Doll aloud to emit “solo” vocals during PCD songs, Melody Thornton, has also left. Good on them. Looking forward to the new post-PCD music!
  • On a slightly more positive (however still drama-involved) topic, early 00’s Swedish girl group Play is reuniting and will be showcasing their attempt at a return to form in a Swedish reality show, recording their album in only four weeks time. However (you knew that was coming), the group will only feature two of the group’s original members (the main singers), Anais Lameche (younger sister of one-hit wonder, about abstinence no less, Amanda — remember her?) and Faye (now nicknamed “Fanny”) Hamlin, along with new group member Sanne Karlsson. The two other original members, Anna Sundstrand and Rosie Munter, are both pursuing solo careers (Munter as Rosanna), and Sundstrand herself has stated she was basically told she was not allowed to take part in the new Play, even though she expressed interest. Hamlin first left the group in 2003 to pursue college, and was replaced by another now solo singer, Janet Leon, until the group called it quits in 2005. I was a fan of the group until Hamlin left, and even after she did, the group always produced quality pop jams — the majority of which produced by epic Swedish producer Andreas Carlsson (part of the Cheiron Collective who brought us “I Want It That Way” and “Bye Bye Bye”, amongst so many others). This could prove to bring us more sassy tunage — as Lameche and Hamlin have already demonstrated their keen vocal abilities at a young age (especially on their sophomore record, Replay). Now older and wiser, this could prove to be very exciting indeed.
  • Black Eyed Peas’ latest single off The E.N.D., “Imma Be”, is officially the most added song to Top 40 radio this week. Do you think it’ll be yet another hit for them? Sade is top dog at Urban AC, and Trey Songz “Say Aah” is top pick at Rhythmic. Iyaz‘s Jason DeRulo-penned hit “Replay” (also produced by Beluga Heights producer JR Rotem) continues to make a huge wave (and is apparently on serious ‘replay’…bad pun? ::sigh::) as it takes over the Top Spot at Top 40/CHR Radio with over 2.6K spins this week. Ke$ha jumps to #3 with “Tik Tok”, and Gaga zooms to #6 with “Bad Romance”.

[WGO] Nuggets of News & More

As I stated yesterday, I was away for a week and it feels like a year in terms of pertinent music musings. Here is the Cliff Notes version. Things I wish to expand on more will see their own posts throughout the rest of the week.

+ The “Halloween” Hot 100 Top 10:
1. Jay Sean – Down (feat. Lil Wayne)
2. Jason DeRulo – Whatcha Say
3. Miley Cyrus – Party In the USA
4. Jay-Z – Run This Town (feat. Rihanna & Kanye West)
5. Britney Spears – 3
6. Lady Gaga – Paparazzi (AIRPLAY GAINER)
7. Owl City – Fireflies
8. Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling
9. Black Eyed Peas – Meet Me Halfway (DIGITAL GAINER)
10. Taylor Swift – You Belong With Me

+ While Jay Sean‘s “Down” has recaptured the #1 on spot away from Ms. Britney‘s “3” this past week, the Black Eyed Peas are aiming to have a third #1 off of The E.N.D. “Meet Me Halfway” bounced into the Top 10 this past week at #9, back to back with former ruler of the #1 spot with an iron fist, “I Gotta Feeling” at #8. And if you’re like me, and have been watching Major League Baseball over the past few days, you’ve probably seen their DirectTV whoring to the tune of the song a down-right irritating amount of times. It’s not that I’m suddenly against the fact that 2009 is clearly the Year of the Peas, it’s just that whenever an artist/album completely dominates, the media tends to forget about all the other great records that come out. The weird thing is, it’s not like the BEP are all over the television or concert stages. Which is why the chart provalence leaves me kind of scratching my head. Plus, I’m bitter that “Rock That Body” or “Missing You” wasn’t chosen over the (IMO) somewhat snooze-y “Halfway.” ::sigh:: In my opinion, it’s only a matter of time before Miley or Jason DeRulo also rule the top spot.

+ Many tracks from many major artists have seen some leakage as of late, but I gotta throw it to Lady Gaga. Her The Fame re-release, slated for release in late November, is clearly going to be monster in-deed. “Bad Romance” may be “Poker Face,” (Part 2), and the “muh muh” bits may be a bit like beating a dead horse in terms of Gaga-isms, but I think it will not surprise you that this has seen a ridiculous amount of plays on my iPod since word of it’s leak was announced. Ditto that to fellow new track (and potential single) “Alejandro (Don’t Call My Name)”. The song has sparked an Ace of Base revival within me that makes me nostaglic for my single digit years when pop was completely guilt-less. I saw the sign, indeed.

+ Gagaliciousness aside, the other big release this past week was the world premiere of Rihanna‘s ‘comeback’ single “Russian Roulette”, the dark, haunting debut single from her upcoming album Rated R, due for release the same date as Gaga’s re-release. From go, it’s very apparent it’s one of those songs that you either love or loathe upon first listen, but I’m kind of in the middle. Sure, it’s gorgeous in it’s eagerness to prove Rihanna is more than a pretty face (which seems a bit strange to me, considering the fact she didn’t write the thing, Ne-Yo did), but the lyrics seem a bit callous considering her February fallout with Chris Brown. I suppose that was the intended perception, so this is to prove Rihanna is still healing, but still capable of hitting her viewers between the eyes. Should this be the case, I say touche to her and Def Jam, but speaking from a music critic’s perspective, I’m more than a little disappointing. After the incredibleness that was “Disturbia” (the song was #2 on my list of Top 28 Songs of 2008, so I’m rather partial to it), and the general epicness that was Good Girl Gone Bad, I’m starting to find “Russian Roulette” a supreme gamble in itself. It doesn’t sound like a first single, especially not from someone who is known for her upbeat material. I’m not ruling her out by any means, and given the current industry custom of spinning “buzz singles” first, we may all be thrown for a loop by how Rated R will turn out. But as for “Roulette”, let’s just say I’m bemused. That’s a good way to put it. I’m sure it will be a “grower” and all that, but…::sigh::

+ On a Side Note: a sad part of me likes to hold grudges against celebrities that I don’t even know, so I really didn’t want to even listen to Chris Brown’s new buzz single, “I Can Transform Ya” (featuring the ridiculously ubiquitous and now the potentially soon-to-be-incarcarated Lil Wayne). But I did, and I have to admit I’m hooked. So perhaps, I can get over myself and listen to him again. I’ve been a fan since “Run It”, but I doubt I’ll ever truly forgive what he’s done, not necessarily because I’m a Rihanna fan, but because I’m a woman. Still, the song is hot. It’s nothing new, but it’s certainly more fun to listen to than “Russian Roulette”.

+ My new absolute favorite UK trio, Red Blooded Women, have unleashed upon the world a brand new single in addition to their lovely spruced up MySpace page. It’s called “Halo”, and if you’re expecting some kind of Ryan Tedder mid-tempo ballad anthem, you can sit the eff down. “Halo” is absolutely everything that I love about the UK electro market right now, and if this doesn’t lead to the big things that these sweethearts deserve, I don’t really know what does. Fingers crossed this will lead to a full album release very soon. ::stamps foot::

+ Speaking of albums that are long overdue, Simon Curtis has taken to his Twitter to announce he’s hard at work with longtime collaborator (and former producer extraordinaire for my lovelies in the former Candy Coated Chaos) Jadion to whip up a brand new album’s worth of tracks that should see imminent release. In fact, he’s feeling so generous that once his Twitter reaches 6,000 followers, he will release his new single, “Delusional”, for free. So spread the word, Melismatic-ites…

+ I’m really starting to get into lil miss Livvi Franc. Enough said.

+ ‘Glee‘ has become so omnipresent, it’s starting to scare me. As Paul so elocuently put it, it’s kind of becoming the Lady Gaga of new American television. Billboard recently announced it has tied the juggarnaut that is ‘Hannah Montana‘ in terms of Hot 100 chart entries this past year, the cast is slated to sing the National Anthem during one of the World Series games, a soundtrack album will be dropping before year’s end, and word is starting to circulate that the cast may be featured on a major venue, multi-city tour in 2010. My head is starting to spin at the possibilities.

+ I’ve listened to Shakira and Dragonette‘s new records, and adore what I hear. I’ve also listened to most to Selena Gomez & The Scene‘s album and am surprisingly semi-impressed by the material. I’ve yet to listen to Alexandra Burke or Cheryl Cole‘s records, but I promise to do so…at some point. Word seems to be quite mixed regarding those two depending on who I talk to, so…we will see.

[WGO] Hollywood Shakeups

I’ve had a long and crazy two days what with the whirlwind that is Hollywood Undead coming to New York. They are six crazy guys, who put on a crazy good show (despite their sometimes offensive lyrical content), and are very down-to-earth and just plain funny. Most of the stories I can’t really go into on here because they shouldn’t be told in mixed company, but if you’re interested, let me know. Haha. Here’s what’s been happening since I blogged last.

  • I will talk about this more in depth soon, but U2 has overtaken Taylor Swift on the album chart with the highest amount of album sales in one week so far in 2009.
  • The Pussycat Dolls talked to MTV recently about how sad they felt regarding the Danity Kane split. Although this sounds like pandering on the surface, they do have some statements that are pretty real — its hard to keep girls together in a group, especially in a situation where you are put together.
  • Ashlee Simpson-Wentz has officially been cast alongside former ‘Supernatural’ star (and daughter of teen idol legend David Cassidy and former Jesse McCartney arm candy) Katie Cassidy in the re-launch of “Melrose Place” to be aired on the CW. She does have some acting experience, so…I suppose it’s not totally left field. I personally think Ashlee is better off acting than singing (although she could be a song-writer for others). The jury is out on this show concept though. CW makes me kind of sad that it houses all of this recycled schmuck and one of my two must-see shows.
  • Carrie Underwood has covered a Motley Crue song for this year’s “goodbye” song on ‘Idol’. It’s a cover of “Home Sweet Home.” I won’t knock it til I hear it I suppose…
  • So wait — you mean Chris Brown‘s almost 40 year old manager was the reason for the Chrianna fight? You’ve got to be kidding! And in other news regarding said drama: Rihanna‘s Gucci gown that she wore the night of the attack to Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party was taken into custody because it had blood stains on it. ::shakes head::
  • Oh, and the Jonas Brothers have announced world tour dates, and that their new album of new material will be in stores on June 15th. I can barely contain my excitement! šŸ™‚

You Gon’ Be In the Emergency Room…

I did you wrong, girl (wrong, girl)
Had a couple numbers in my phone, girl (numbers in my phone, girl)
But we been in this relationship too long, girl
For you to be listening to your silly home girls

You better go on, girl
Now, baby think about it
Everything we do, they gonna read about it
Put it on the radio and TV outlet
Do you wanna see your picture in that paper?
You know them haters…

You hear that 808
The drum… that’s my heartbeat
I’m going numb
I said, “Rihanna, I’m feelin’ stressed”
“I’m goin’ into cardiac arrest”

Those lyrics above are from the Mario song, “Emergency Room”, slated to feature Rhianna. The demo leaked just before the fiasco that was the Chrianna drama, and prior to that, there were whispers it might be a new single for Mario. I have to say, the song is one hot jam, but now, its in jeopardy of even being included on Mario’s upcoming fourth album. People say the lyrics hit a little too close to home for Rhianna. That hasn’t stopped the song from spinning a ridiculous amount on my iTunes.

FYI – the female singing in the recording IS NOT the actual Rhianna, but are actually of up and coming singer Pricilla Renae.

I bring this track up not just because its banging, but because the official details regarding the night of the aforementioned drama have officially come to light, and Chris Brown has been charged with two felonies based on the attack, and rumors are swirling that this is not the first time he has threatened Rhianna. I refuse to put stock in any rumor until is no longer a rumor, but truth. Which is why the details of that particular night officially being released are even more disturbing, as they are real.

New “news” on the drama continues to pour out seemingly on the hour. Rhianna’s father is claiming she is freezing her family out, yet her representation confirmed that she will testify against Chris if she is supeoned (do you think she will be?). Then there is the never-ending predictions that Rhianna is pregnant, or the two have secretly gotten married. I’ve also heard that the two will go on a tour promoting domestic abuse awareness in an attempt to salvage Chris’s singing career. ::shakes head::

I don’t know what to believe.

[WGO] Chris Brown, Idol & Other Randoms…

-It’s just not a good time to be Chris Brown. Like hardcore. Breezy may look cute and harmless in the picture to the left, but that image is, as Justin Timberlake warbled, “Dead and Gone.” Because apparently, D.A.’s want to charge him for all kinds of stuff stemming from the Chriannagate attack on Grammy day, including a potential charge of attempted murder. That is no joke.
Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s bandname is misspelled on the cover art of the latest addition of Guitar Hero (dubbed Guitar Hero: Metallica). Their name is written as “Lynyrd Skynrd”. Rolling Stone was the one who apparently first spied the mistake. My question is: why is Lynyrd Skynyrd featured on a game that highlights Metallica music?

-Remember these names: ‘Idol’ has announced its first three semifinalists: Alexis Grace, Danny Gokey and Michael Sarver. Mel’s fave of the three? Gokey, for sure. His version of “Hero” really did blow me away in terms of an early season performance, but I’m not so sure I dig the fact that he uses his wife’s death as a sympathy plot. Yes, I know, I sound heartless for saying that…it’s just…I don’t know. It feels…off. We’ll see how he and the other two stack up against the six other fan-chosen semifinalists. Just as long as Tatiana Del Toro is gone for good, and not brought back as a wildcard. Please say it ain’t so!

-E!Online has a stack of quotes by Kanye West via his cover story with Details, out this month, as well as a story about a video game “remix” he “program” that I can only describe with one word: disturbing.

[WGO] After a Mini (Unexpected) Hiatus

-I promise I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth — it’s just I also have a job and I’m so darn tired after work, and when I’m faced with the choice of blogging or sleeping, I choose the latter…
-According to Hits Daily Double, Taylor Swift is back on target to be #1 on the album chart this week, but could (possibly) be held off by Ms. Lily Allen or even the Grammy Darlings Plant & Krauss. The whole Top 10 of the Album Chart looks to be shaken up as the numbers stand now, with entrances by SNL’s Lonely Island, India.Arie and possibly even Bobby Valentino. We shall find out for sure tomorrow…

-Speaking of which, Keri Hilson has jumped on to Hits Daily Double’s radar as the #16 Vibe Rater Artist of the Week, in acknowledgement of the strides “Turnin’ Me On” is making at radio.

-The drama between Chris Brown/Rihanna (dubbed affectionately Chriannagate by my friend, The Prophet — haha — I’m stealing that!) continues to swirl, as Chris Brown has made an official statement stating he is sorry, and is seeking help from his family and pastor. In my opinion, the apology was heartfelt, but in the prophetic words of JoJo, “it’s just too little, too late.” We shall see. I’m more interested to hear what Ms. Rihanna has to say. A projected sob story is on the cover of both People Magazine and Star Magazine this week.

-Next Tuesday sees releases by K’NAAN (officially its his sophomore album, but this is his major label debut), Jonas Brothers (the soundtrack to their upcoming 3D movie which has “live” cuts), Lamb of God and N.E.R.D.

-A song I talked about a few weeks ago, Flo Rida‘s new single “Right Round”, is making serious bank, and may end up breaking the digital rise record that Eminem/50 Cent/Dr. Dre broke this past week. It has sold over 550,000 copies digitally this past week, tops iTunes chart, and could even be #1 tomorrow…

-It was made official that Coldplay‘s “Viva La Vida…” album sold 6.8 million copies worldwide in 2008, making it the best selling CD of the year. Silver and Bronze were given to AC/DC‘s “Black Ice” and the soundtrack to “Mamma Mia!”, respectively.

-SONY (sans the BMG? I’m confused) has signed a deal with YouTube to help keep its artists music videos (legally) on the video website. It is the first major label group to do so out of the Big Four…

The Black Eyed Peas have finally confirmed a release date for their much anticipated (especiallyby me!) new album, “The E.N.D.”. It will be released on June 9, 2009, per the good folks at Interscope. It’s been four years since the Peas controlled the radio, and three since Fergie‘s solo album ruled the charts…This makes me wanna go back and grab all my fave Peas songs and rejoice!

Mandy Moore is getting married, or at least that’s what her publicist is saying, to rocker Ryan Adams. I find the fact that her so-so new single “I Could Break Your Heart Any Day” leaks right around the same time this “news” breaks quite suspect. (sigh) I fear this industry is turning me jaded, friends. But if this is what sound we should expect from Ms. Mandy, I can safely say I’m 275% more interested in an album from Mandy Ventrice

-Time Magazine has thsi great article talking about the prevalence of auto-tune in pop music, and the impact of T-Pain and his trademark vocoded vocals…It’s well worth a read. Check it out here, dubbed ‘Auto-Tune: Why Pop Music Sounds Perfect’

Lady Gaga has put out a new video for “Love Game”, and she takes Britney‘s diamond-encrusted-nakedness to a new “haut” level. YouTube won’t let me post the official thing, but you can watch it here. Fingers still crossed for a video for “Starstruck”…America — we have a new popstar! šŸ™‚

[WGO] Disturbia, Idol, JB and Dancing With the Stars…

-As expected, the Chris Brown/Rihanna drama just gets juicier and more upsetting by the minute. I don’t know what to believe, but the rumors surrounding, not just that illfated night, but their entire relationship, draw your attention like nothing we’ve seen since Britney‘s breakdown. PopEater has created a list of the Top 10 rumors surrounding the situation, ranging from the ludacris (Rihanna gave Chris Brown herpes that she got from Jay-Z), to the could-be plausible (Paris Hilton flirted with Brown and caused the argument), but all of them are addictive. A lot of sources are starting to claim that this wasn’t the pair’s first fight, which makes this all the more sad.

Both Jay-Z and Kanye West have come to Rihanna’s defense. I don’t like that rumors are starting to shake out that place the majority of the blame on Rihanna, as even if they fought because of something she did wrong, she certainly did not derserve a beatdown like the one reported. However, I fear this incident may have created the first pop culture catchphrase of 2009, as in my office alone, the comeback “I’ll go Chris Brown on you” has already become a staple…and it’s funny in a not-so-funny way.

In a funny turn of events, both Brown and Rihanna are nominated for NAACP Image Awards. The show airs tonight.

-‘American Idol’s most talked about contestant so far this season, Joanna Pacitti, has officially been let go and disqualified, despite officially making it past Hollywood week, and will be replaced by another competitor. This is due to the kerfufel involving her professional past: she was signed to A&M, released an album that flopped in 2006, had songs on several major soundtracks including “Legally Blonde” and “Bratz”, and one of her songs was recently covered by Britney Spears. I personally liked her, and have liked her since I first heard “Watch Me Shine” from the aforementioned “Legally Blonde” soundtrack. However, I can see people’s grief over her inclusion, because, in theory, “American Idol” is supposed to be a show about making amateurs into superstars. She definitely has had a lot more experience that your average next door neighbor.

-Set the DVR! The Jonas Brothers will be the musical guest this week on ‘Saturday Night Live’, with the host being Alec Baldwin. I am a HUGE fan of SNL, and have been for as long as I can remember. So when someone I enjoy following is on the show, I always get psyched. Alec usually gives an awesome show, and add to that the JB boys will be playing a couple of tunes makes having no boyfriend to spend Valentine’s Day with bareable…in a sad kind of way. I’m gonna guess they will perform “Tonight” and “Burnin’ Up”, although I’d love to see them do “Lovebug” or “Pushin’ Me Away”. And if they turn up in a sketch that makes fun of themselves even just a little bit, I’ll probably die with happiness. Will you be tuning in?

-Celebrities for the upcoming “Dancing With the Stars” season prove to be one of the juiciest yet, and may just pull my eyeballs from the meh beginning of “Idol” this year. Those dancing this year will include: Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Go’s, David Alan Grier, Jewel, Olympic Gymnast Shawn Johnson, frickin’ Lil Kim, Gilles Marini (better known as Samantha’s eyecandy in the “Sex and the City” movie), Jewel’s husband Ty Murray, Steve-O, “Access Hollywood”s Nancy O’Dell, media whore/the-person-I-most-want-to-go-away-besides-Soulja -Boy-and-Lindsay-Lohan Denise Richards, NFL star Lawrence Taylor, country singer/dancer cutie Julianne Hough‘s BF Chuck Wicks and Kathy Griffin‘s boyfriend/former boyfriend(?)/Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak.

Grammy’s 2009: A Look At the Madness (or Lack There Of)

I had meant to do a blog beforehand discussing who I wanted to win and who I thought would win on music’s “biggest night”. However, I was distracted because I spent the majority of Saturday at the NYC premiere of Friday, the 13th, and got to see it before the entire world(!) and got to meet my future husband and father to my future children Jared Padalecki(!!!!). Derek Mears, who played Jason, sat two rows in front of me during the movie screening. Crazy.
Anywho, enough of my gloating.

The Grammy’s were somewhat predictable. The unpredictable part happened BEFOREHAND when it was announced that Chris Brown and Rihanna had cancelled their appearances, and then as the details continued to leak…I grew more and more appalled. He hit her? He beat her? He’s arrested? He’s in jail? He whipped her with a gun? Her jaw is broken? What? WHAT? WHAT?

I’m trying not to give in to the rumors, because we don’t really know what happened yet. So TMZ throwing around the name “Ike Turner” seems a little unfair. We weren’t there, we don’t know the situation, and we also don’t know the extent of the damage. I just hope for both of their sakes that everyone is okay, physically and emotionally, although it doesn’t seem to sound like it.

Should it turn out that all of the rumors prove true, it’s pretty safe to say Chris Brown’s career will take a serious hit. A huge chunk of his fans are young girls, who would (and should) be appalled by this if it proves to be true. I’m not saying you shouldn’t support his music anymore — he had a ton of bangers that were awesome and will remain to be awesome. But still…this doesn’t make him look too good. Strange because he seemed like such a genial good kid. I don’t know what brought this on. People keep bringing up that his step-father used to beat his mother, which I suppose could be an explanation, but he also expressed how upset he was by this, so I doubt he’d want to carry on the tradition.

I was happy that Justin Timberlake and Al Green stepped in in Rihanna’s place. Their rendition of “Let’s Stay Together” was interesting to say the least, especially when it was revealed who their backup singers were…Boyz II Men! It’s nice to see they are still given respect, even if it is in an small way.

I don’t know if I was the only one, but I kinda dug the Hip Hop Summit with M.I.A. doing “Swagga Like Us”. Sure, it was overhyped, but I thought it was pretty cool. And let’s all give props to M.I.A. — due to give birth and still rocking it, wiggling around in her little mushroom looking getup with stunna shades. Crazy.

I loved the tribute to the Four Tops with Smokey Robinson, Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo. Sure, the inclusion of the two on the latter was a bit random, but I think it was well executed and a nice send off to the legends that were (and are) the Four Tops. Jamie Foxx pleased me that he didn’t ham it up too much, and Ne-Yo, although I could go either way on his music, he does have avoice that makes my ovaries quiver a little bit (not unlike Robin Thicke…ooooh Robin Thicke!).

Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus were absolutely atrocious. I’m sorry. They were. Especially Miley. Taylor was a little flat but she sounded like Whitney Houston compared to Miley and her shouted “notes”. Plus, what’s the deal with the song? “Fifteen”? I get it for Taylor. She’s 19. It’s cute, it’s “nostalgical.” But Miley was 15 like…15 minutes ago. Was this meant to be some kind of slap at the Jonas Brothers?

Speaking of, the sheer fact that the Jonas Brothers performed with Stevie Wonder really bothered me. You all know I have an affinity for Kevin, Nick and Joe J, but my sweet Lord, you are not on the level of Mr. Wonder. Not even close. Who dreamt up this collabo? Just because they covered “Superstition” at an AMA after party with Jordin Sparks (and that version was better than this one — in fact Jordin should have performed with Stevie), doesn’t mean they should get to do it on the Grammies. Joe started off sort of strong but fell off the wagon fast. And I didn’t dig the whole “C’mon Joe! C’mon Stevie!” bits. Nick — please don’t. Please. You’re lucky enough you got Stevie Wonder to “sing” your “Prince-inspired” song. Yes, I rock out to “Burnin’ Up” from time to time, but I strong enough in my OJD to admit — the teaming with Stevie was not cool.

Katy Perry kicked off her “performance” coming down in a giant banana into a bowl of fruit. Do you get her clever innuendo? Tee hee, she’s so sneaky. Not. Besides the fact that I can’t stand this song and it’s ungodly way to get stuck in my head, it was almost as fork-scraped-on-a-plate irritating as the Rock’s “funny” and very pointless monologue in the beginning.

I was bummed Kings of Leon didn’t win over Coldplay for best Rock Album, but at least “Sex On Fire” won for best rock song. As I predicted, the brothers Jonai didn’t win Best New Artist. We all knew they wouldn’t. So everyone can shut their traps mollified, alright?

I’m not gonna harp on Alison Krauss & Company, but I will say that clearly the Grammy voters are all over 70, white and regularly listen to the soundtrack to “O Brother Where Art Thou?” That must be the only reason why Kid Rock (in a pop category no less) or the Jonas Brothers would be nominated for a Grammy at all (to please the kids).

Did you watch the show? What was your favorite part? What’s your take on the Chris Brown/Rihanna scandal?

Shopaholics <3 Music, Especially Rihanna

Disney’s brainchild Hollywood Records will release the soundtrack to the upcoming film “Confessions of A Shopaholic” (starring “Wedding Crashers” Isla Fisher, pictured, out on February 13th) on February 10th, and it is chock full of new…ish music that tends to keep leaking. However it does answer a few questions that I had.
A Rihanna track entitled “Bad Girl” is included (not to be confused with the underrated Danity Kane track), which also features her possible fiancee(?) Chris Brown, and the song leaked last week thanks to various blogs. If you look hard enough, you’ll probably find it. It’s not half bad of a track, and sounds very very Rihanna, mixed up with Beyonce‘s “Ring the Alarm” with all of her background yelling of “I got a problem”, “I need you to solve it.” The weirdest bit of the track is in Chris Brown’s feature, as he is semi-rapping. Yes, you read that correct. Strange indeed.

This helps clear up my question of whether or not this was Rihanna’s next single, seeing as she hasn’t released a new song in a week. (I kid, I kid.) It’s good to know this is just a soundtrack cut, because although its fun to listen to, its definitely not first single worthy. Besides, “Rehab” is my favorite cut from Good Girl Gone Bad, and isn’t getting the chance to percalate the way it should, seeing as I’ve rarely seen Rihanna promote it. It’s a Timbaland track co-written by Justin Timberlake for crying out loud. It should be getting more attention than that “Shut Up and Drive” did. Grrrr.

The soundtrack will also feature new music from Girlicious (they are better than the seem, I promise, however this suspected cover of “Big Spender” makes me a little bit ashamed), Lady Gaga, Chris Brown and Natasha Bedingfield.

It’s rare that I get excited about movie soundtracks these days, so I hope this one doesn’t disappoint.

Amazon lists the full track listing as follows:

1. Big Spender (Girlicious)
2. Again (Natasha Bedingfield)
3. Uncontrollable (Adrienne)
4. Don’t Forget Me (Macy Gray)
5. Stuck With Each Other (Akon & Shontelle)
6. Fashion (Lady Gaga)
7. Accessory (Jordin Taylor)
8. Music In the Sun (Rihanna)
9. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Greg Laswell)
10. I Would Do Anything For You (Rick Ocasek)
11. Bad Girl (Rihanna)
12. Take Time To Love (Chris Brown)

Check it out now, Funk Soul Brother

Here are a few songs that have gotten a pretty obscene amount of plays by me recently. You should probably check them out too.

LADY SOVERIGN “I Got You Dancing”
Lady SOV is pop/rap type artist from the UK. She first burst through on the scene a few years ago with ā€œLove Me Or Hate Meā€. This song is the first single from her new album, due for release soon. The song sounds a lot like ā€œLove Meā€¦ā€ in its delivery, but includes an infusion of electropop and the use of a vocoder for more of a dance feel. Itā€™s definitely a unique and fun listen, and catchy as all hell.

DRAGONETTE ā€œI Get Aroundā€
I know this song is somewhat old by now, but I was first introduced to Dragonette formally a few months ago, and I fell in love with this song. Itā€™s so electro and kitchy and incredible. That syth backdrop gets stuck in my head.

JAY SEAN “Tonight”
I fell in love with this song a few weeks ago and its been on my playlists ever since. A remix version (that is really hard to find) was recently featured as a ā€œSong of the Dayā€ at PopJustice, and its just as good if not better. Something else to add to my pile of songs to look forā€¦Sean sounds like a British Chris Brownā€¦in fact, had I not known who it was, I would have assumed it was Chris Brown. And apparently, he’s signed to T Lopez’ label, Cash Money Records.

CHRIS BROWN “Believer”
I donā€™t know what this track is. It almost sounds unfinished, but it is still incredible. It sounds like part 2 of ā€œForeverā€ in a more laid back way. I donā€™t know if it is an unused demo or part of his upcoming album due out in ā€™09. Either way, I think it has promise.

KINGS OF LEON “Sex On Fire”
Iā€™m usually not much for rock type bands, but Kings of Leon seem pretty legit to me. I used to say Iā€™m weary of bands featured on the soundtrack to ā€˜Gossip Girlā€™ as being too hipster, but given they have featured the Ting Tings, Nadia Oh, Junkie XL and now Kings of Leon, I really canā€™t hate much. Just about every song Iā€™ve heard I kinda like, because itā€™s not your typical pop/rock. It has something different. Something just else. And the vocalistā€™s pipes are definitely unique and claw at you.

KANYE WEST ā€œLove Lockdownā€ / ā€œHeartlessā€
I may not enjoy Kanye Westā€™s ego (except in humorous way), but itā€™s hard to ignore that he does make good danceable music with thoughtful lyrics. Iā€™m not gonna praise it to the extreme that he wants me to, but from the moment I first heard ā€œLove Lockdownā€ at this yearā€™s VMAs, I wanted to hear it over and over again. The latest albumā€™s next single ā€œHeartlessā€ is almost as good. They tend to be growers, and are undeniably unique in this market.

CANDY COATED CHAOS “Treat”
I adore these girls, as you can probably guess. ā€œTreatā€ is by far their strongest offering (of the songs they have premiered on MySpace, anyway) that has a strong dance feel, and is battling with ā€œAngelā€ for my favorite song by them. It was written by Simon Curtis, another pop virtuoso who is undercredited for his genius. It calms my heart that the world will soon know of both of these artists! If you havenā€™t heard this, you can download it for free at http://www.trueanthem.com/artists/CandyCoatedChaos.

LADY GAGA “Starstruck”
Iā€™m so bummed this was only treated as a bonus track on ā€œThe Fame.ā€ Aside from ā€œJust Danceā€ and ā€œPoker Faceā€, this song is by far my fave Gaga track. I also just heard a new remix of the song that is just as good as the original. The song is insanely catchy, and is a lot of fun to dance to. Because I know from a lot of experience.

ROBYN “Keep This Fire Burning (2008)”
Iā€™ve been a Robyn fan since I canā€™t even tell you when. I remember being so young and singing along to ā€œShow Me Loveā€ when it came on the radio. Iā€™m so glad sheā€™s back and pumping out electro hits. ā€œKeep This Fire Burningā€ is a re-imagining of her older hit, and it is just phe-nom-en-al. I have no words other than everyone needs to bow down to how great Ms. Robyn is.

MONROSE “Don’t Touch the Fader”
I doubt itā€™ll be used as a single from their latest album, but it should be released as a club single as a way to sashay their way into the American market. The beats and synths are so sick, I canā€™t even describe them to you.

JESSICA MAUBOY “Burn”
Iā€™m new to the whole Jessica Mauboy phenomenon (Iā€™m American, you must forgive me for these things) but I really do love her album inside and out. ā€œBurnā€ is awesome, even if the chorus is a bit random (ā€œThis is starting to burnā€ sounds a bit naughty to my earsā€¦but I tend to twist thingsā€¦). I think it was PopJustice who described the song as being a mixture of Rihannaā€™s ā€œDisturbiaā€ and The Saturdayā€™s ā€œUpā€ and I think that is pretty on point.

You want one of these songs? You know the drill — comment and you shall recieve.
